THE MOON BRIDGE

(1986)

The Chinese Moon Bridge in the “Seven Star“ park in Kweilin, China, is the original that inspired the construction of the bridge. The reflection of the bridge on the water forms the circle of the moon when the pond is full. As it adjusted to the undulating topography, it became the Dragon Moon Bridge.

It is an adaptation of a bridge that Marianne's father, Francis Cabot, saw while visiting Seven Stars Park in Guilin, in China's Guangxi province. In Quatre-Vents, the bridge was first built of wood by local carpenters. When the water level allows us to see the shape of a circle through the reflection of its half-moon architecture, its name takes on its full meaning.

The moon bridge is just as fascinating when you cross it. You must first go down a few steps before climbing as many to reach its middle; then go down and go up again to reach the opposite bank. This succession of 4 times 6 steps, going up and down, recalls the semi-diurnal tidal cycle found in the St. Lawrence.
