THE TAPIS VERT

(1930)

The long green lawn running from the terraces towards the west, called the Tapis Vert, constitutes the main axis of the garden. Built in 1930, it is bordered to the north by a double hedge of transplanted barberries (Berberis thunbergii) and hawthorns (Crataegus foetidus) coming from neighbouring areas. The view to the west extends through pastures and woods right up to the Laurentians.

The terraces, walls and stairs (1933) polarize the enchanting spirit of the grounds and Les Quatre-Vents gardens. This subtle and elegant composition was designed by New York architect Edward J. Mathews.

Connected to the house by large bay windows, the terraces dominate the landscape with their altitude and their openness. They overlook breathtaking views, of pastures, forests and on the horizon the blue peak of the Laurentians.

The terraces and walls were completely rebuilt in the 1980s with the southern geometric rocaille completed in 1987.
